Aims & Scope

The Culture of Islamic Architecture and Urbanism Journal (CIAUJ) is a semiannual, double-blind peer-reviewed publication dedicated to Islamic architecture, urban design, and planning. It explores historical and contemporary aspects of architecture and landscape architecture across the Islamic world, including the Middle East, parts of Africa and Asia, and the broader global presence of Islam.

The journal emphasizes detailed analyses of the practical, historical, and theoretical dimensions of architecture, focusing on both design and its conceptual and societal reception. It fosters dialogue between scholars and practitioners, welcoming original research, review articles, case studies, applied research, methodological studies, and conceptual papers that bridge academia and practice.

While primarily centered on architecture, CIAUJ also encourages interdisciplinary contributions from fields such as art, history, archaeology, anthropology, culture, spirituality, religion, and economics. It is particularly interested in contemporary architecture and urban design in relation to social and cultural history, geography, politics, aesthetics, technology, and conservation.

With an interdisciplinary approach, this journal seeks to explore research in the field of Islamic architecture and urbanism, particularly through the lens of culture. In contemporary discourse, culture is understood as a way of life, shaped by various forms of human behavior. Within Islamic Thought, culture is regarded as an expression of humanity’s inherent abilities, guiding individuals toward self-improvement and perfection. Given its broad application to all aspects of human existence, culture plays a fundamental role in shaping architectural and urban traditions.

The primary objective of this journal is to foster critical, creative, and innovative discourse rooted in Islamic architecture, examining the culture of architecture and urbanism through three key dimensions: framework, lifestyle, and concepts. To achieve this, the journal welcomes contributions in the following areas:

•    Analysis of perspectives, models, and architectural works
•    Examination of contemporary challenges
•    Presentation of new concepts, models, and solutions
•    Comparative studies of architecture and urbanism within the cultural sphere of Iran

By encouraging scholarly dialogue and intellectual exchange, the journal aims to advance research that bridges traditional insights with contemporary challenges in Islamic architectural and urban studies.

Spanning diverse cultures and disciplines, CIAUJ critically examines issues related to the built environment across the regions it covers. Its readership includes both academics and professionals. The journal is published in both print and online formats, with its first issue released in 2015.
